AFC EAST – Quick Division Draft Analysis
#3 Miami Dolphins – What can I say, Jeff Ireland has thrown off the chains of Bill Parcells and proclaimed that he is a man to be reckoned with. I love the pick of Dion Jordan whom I honestly thought would be an expensive acquisition and thus unattainable. But moving up by just giving up the 42nd pick was a steal. And in this strange scenario both teams seemed to be winners, since Oakland still got their guy at 12. To read more about why Dion Jordan is important click here (Blitzfin Defense).
#16 Buffalo Bills – They moved down from #8 to #16 and picked up 3 extra draft picks from St. Louis (#48, #80, and #224). The Bills now have a total of 4 picks in rounds 2 and 3 tonight with #42, #48, #73 and #80. Honestly I would be very pleased if I were a Bills fan, EJ Manuel got my attention after seeing him perform at an extremely high level all week down in Alabama at the Senior Bowl, I felt as though he was aguythatwould have been on my radar along with Geno Smith if Miami had not selected Tannehill the year before. If Landry Jones or Tyler Wilson had performed the way EJ Manuel had done at the Senior Bowl they would have been considered TOP 10 picks, that’s just the unfortunate stereotype Quarterbacks like EJ Manuel have to overcome. The Bills just made themselves a much better football team. On offense they will have the ability to implement some read option schemes into their play calling. They can continue to strengthen their roster by adding pieces at WR, OG, OLB, SS later today.
#9 New York Jets – Milliner is a great pick at #9, he is a very experienced player hailing from the best program in country. He is well coached and disciplined, no stranger to big game situations, the only knock is that is ball skills aren’t great, but he is going to be there consistently to break up plays and help in the run game. Can play press, man and off-man. But even with Milliner falling into their lap, I am sure Rex Ryan was pissed that he did not get a shot at either Brakevious Mingo or Ezekiel Ansah. It would have worked out a lot better for the Jets if they were able to draft OLB at #9 followed by CB with #13.
#13 New York Jets – DT Sheldon Richardson must have been very high on the Jets board, because I don’t see 3-4 DE as huge position of need for them. The Jets did lose DE Mike Devito in the off-season but they still had two very talented 3-4 DEs in Muhammad Wilkerson and Quinton Coples. Sheldon Richardson is a sub 300lbs DT which means I don’t think he can play effectively at NT in their scheme and will have to rotate with Wilkerson and Coples as a 3-4 DE, therefore the pick seemed redundant. The Jets badly needed a pass rusher at OLB, they must have thought very little of the OLBs that remained on the board like Jarvis Jones and Bjoern Werner, so why not trade back?
#29 New England Patriots – I can’t determine who is the bigger crook in football, is it Jimmy Haslam or Bill Belichick? The “Hoody” completely fleeced the Minnesota Vikings by acquiring four picks to give up their #29 selection. The Pats got #54, #85, #102, #229 from the Vikings who took the dynamic WR Cordarrelle Patterson. We will now see the Patriots selecting 4 times later on today. Lets hope they screw it up and select garbage.
