Fin’s Draft – Final Thoughts

LB Jordan Tripp could be a steal for the Fins

LB Jordan Tripp could be a steal for the Fins

Ok, so I have had a little time to digest this year’s Dolphin draft. I generally try to take a day or two to avoid knee jerk reactions. Initially, I was underwhelmed. But now that I’ve thought on it, I’ve realized that this draft was ok. Not great, but not terrible either.

In the first round I think James will be the immediate starter on the right side of the line. I don’t see him as a dominating, Pro Bowler type. Think more along the lines of a Todd Wade or Vernon Carey type. I still think Miami could of traded down 5-10 spots and landed him, making him somewhat of a reach in my opinion. But if he can solidify the right tackle position, I’ll be happy.

In the second and third rounds, the Fins traded back and forth multiple times. Overall, I think the Fins may have lost some trade value here as they selected WR Jarvis Landry out of LSU and then traded back up for Turner.

For the record, I have no problem with this selection. Landry is a superb route runner, and has hands of glue. While he does not having blazing speed, his skill set is perfect for a WCO. If Landry becomes another OJ McDuffie type receiver, in a year or two no one will remember how much trading went on by Miami leading up to his selection.

In the 3rd round, Miami selected “versitile”  OL Billy Turner. You should remember that Coach Philbin used that term last year in describing third round pick Dallas Thomas. But a lot of scouts like Turner, and talked about his high ceiling. I guess we will see if he can break the Miami tradition of selecting offensive linemen in the mid rounds who wash out.

Day 2 was ‘good’ but it could have been MUCH better!

2nd round pick WR Jarvis Landry

2nd round pick WR Jarvis Landry

Dolphins get Landry in Round 2 (a player to momentarily subdue the ‘ball watchers’ who wanted a SEXY pick)

Here’s hoping that Miami has learned from their past mistakes and actually lets Landry FULLY recover from his injured hamstring instead of pushing him to workout (see Taylor, Thomas, Davis and Jordan).

They got less value for their trade backs than any other team in Round 2. Miami got a 4th to move back once (to #57) and a 5th to move back again (to 63). Meanwhile, 49ers got a 5th this year AND a 4th NEXT year to move back from 56 and only gave up a 5th to get back up to 57.

Add to that the inexplicable reasoning of allowing SF to give you 63 (one spot AFTER Pats) instead of pick 61 (one spot BEFORE Pats).

THEN to move up into the beginning of Round 3, they give up their FIRST 4th round pick?! How do they only get a 5th to move back but give up an EARLY 4th to move up?!

Round 3:

Miami selects Billy Turner who played Tackle at N Dakota St but projects to Guard in NFL.

Dolphins take a chance on T/G Ja’Wuan James

Let’s start by acknowledging Miami has no starting caliber RT currently on its roster. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Miami had to be feeling desperate when in back to back picks Dallas took T Zack Martin at #16, and the Ravens selected CJ Mosley at #17. Those presumably were Miami’s top two targets, at least according to the rumors, and media.

Regardless, Dennis Hickey knew he had to come away early in this draft with a starting lineman who had some versatility, maturity, and the skill to start immediately. James fits that criteria. He can play inside at guard, or outside at tackle. It’s RT where he played at Tennessee that Miami will place him.

Many, many Dolphin fans hate the pick, but to justify it I think you need to think a little outside the box of a typical draft decision.

  1. As stated earlier Miami does not have a legitimate starting RT on the roster. That kind of puts a bolder definition on the term NEED. It becomes a MUST HAVE.
  2. Philbin, and by connection Hickey are on the hot seat. If they did not address, and fix the line heads will roll. 58 sacks, young QB, yeah.
  3. The player selected had to be versatile since the line is not yet set.
  4.  With four tackles selected prior to Miami’s 19th pick who could guarantee a capable player would be there at #50? Certainly it was not a gamble Hickey was willing to take, and I don’t blame him.
  5. Many believe Miami should have traded down. Do you really want to gamble here? Failure was not an option, and Hickey was certainly aware of this.
  6. Some scouts believe he can transition to LT which may prove an asset as Albert gets up in age.

Dolphins Top-50 Draft Board (2nd Round Considerations)

Would Tre Mason be the Dolphins' long-term answer at RB?

Would Tre Mason be the Dolphins’ long-term answer at RB?

This 36-50 list completes my Top-50 board for the Miami Dolphins. I have a feeling that this list will be an interesting conversation piece in 2-3 years, for better or worse.

36) C Weston Richburg, Colorado St (6-3, 304)
Richburg would be much higher on my board if not for Pro Bowl C Mike Pouncey. Great pivot man who easily gets into his stance after the snap. Although I doubt it happens, I wouldn’t be against Pouncey moving to OG if Richburg is available at #50.

37) C Marcus Martin, USC* (6-3, 320)
Martin is an extremely mobile Center at 320 poundswho would fit in well in a ZBS. Could he move to RG?

38) DE DeMarcus Lawrence, Boise St* (6-3, 251)
Underrated player with great pass-rush moves. Can move to OLB in a 3-4 if the Dolphins switch Defenses in he next few years.

39) RB Jeremy Hill, LSU* (6-1, 234)
Hill is a tall, powerful downhill runner who broke out for LSU last season with 1401 yards and 16 TD’s.

40) RB Carlos Hyde, Ohio St (6-0, 230)
The draft’s most complete RB averaged 7.3 YPC for the Buckeyes last season.

Dolphins Top-50 Draft Board: 21-35 (Trade Downs or 2nd Round Values?)

OT JaWuan James

OT JaWuan James

Why are people complaining again about watching NCAA gametape out their decks in early May when it’s 80 degrees? I can get used to the NFL Draft in May. Anyway..

Continuing with what I hope new GM Dennis Hickey’s board this weekend, here are the #21-#35 picks on my Dolphins Draft Board.

21) OT JaWuan James, Tennessee (6-6, 311)
James may be more Day-1 ready RT than Taylor Lewan or Zack Martin because he is started all 37 games there in college. He has very good size, arm length, and agility for a big man, and could fit the ZBS because he can get to the second level on run plays.

22) CB Jason Verrett, TCU (5-10, 176)
Verrett is a feisty, quick-twitched player who is undersized only on paper. Like Fuller, Verrett is scheme-diverse in that he has the physicality to jam receivers at the LOS and the hip-flexiblity to turn and run with receivers downfield.

23) S HaHa Clinton-Dix, Alabama (6-1, 207)
Clinton-Dix is a center-fielder type FS with intelligence and range who would pair nicely with SS Re’Shad Jones. He took over for Mark Barron at FS, and had 7 INT’s in 2012 and 2013. He’s the typical good news-bad news Alabama player: while it’s impressive that he was a disciplined playmaker for Nick Saban, his athleticism and long-term ability is a bit overrated.
