Ireland should not overpay for Matt Flynn

We should not overpay for QB Matt Flynn.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to link the Flynn-to-Dolphins connection with the hiring of Joe Philbin.
And why not? Flynn was home grown in the Green Bay Packers’ offensive system under Philbin’s guidance, in a culture where 30-40 point scoring outputs were just another day at the office. Flynn’s two NFL starts yielded eye-popping numbers: 51-81, 730 yards, 9 TD’s, 2 INT’s, 123.0 QB rating, and 72 points.
If Joe Philbin pounds the table for Matt Flynn and thinks he is the guy to carry out his offensive vision for Miami Dolphins, I’m excited. I’m just not willing to make the same mistakes the Raiders, Chiefs, and Cardinals did.
GM Jeff Ireland would be wise not to overpay for Matt Flynn for one simple reason: the Redskins and Seahawks are the only obstacles. If the Skins or Hawks want to offer Flynn the same type of deal the Cardinals gave Kevin Kolb (5 years, $63 million)? I say go for it. I’d rather stick with Matt Moore, drafta QB in the first 3 rounds, and spend our dollars on an impact player such as DE Mario Williamsto play opposite Cameron Wake in our new 4-3 Defense.
Look no furtherthan the Raiders and Cardinals, who are tied now tied at the hip to Carson Palmer and Kevin Kolb simply because they presented marginal upgrades one year ago.
If the Dolphins pay top-shelf money for Matt Flynn, he’s the franchise QB. Period. Forget about QB competition. Matt Moore would hold a clipboard in 2012 before hitting the FA market in 2013. And you can forget about the Dolphins drafting a QB in the 1st round of the 2012 or 2013 draft if one is available in our spot.
Matt Flynn might be a free agent, but the risk he carries in a big contract cannot be forgotten. I am not willing to take this risk. Not based on two games, despite how good the numbers looked.
If the Seahawks or Redskins are unwilling to ante up, the smart money is on Flynn signing on with the Philbin-led Miami Dolphins for a bargain price.

you hit it on the nail. Those teams are definitely handicapped now and we cant do that to ourselves based on 2 meaningless games in the big picture of his career.
Other than a relationship with Philbin and a one game performance against Detroit it seems the popular impetus to throw caution in the wind and pay extraordinary money to Flynn to come to Miami. This makes me nervous and I frankly don’t see what more we get when compared to M Moore. Remember, GB coaches plugged him into a system, in place of A. Rodgers, against Detroit and did not miss a beat. GB is a well oiled machine, with the parts in place. Ask yourself this; what would Matt Moore had done if he had been in Flynn’s place with similar time to learn the system. I could make the argument that he would have probably done just as well. Those who think that Flynn will be the harbinger of instant success are setting themselves up for a let down. Miami has a ways to go to be as refined as GB’s team is in both timing and talent.
I agree with your logic here completely. I just have reservations that the front office will use logic. Especially with the sagging attendance.
