A Man and his Dream – Part IV
We continue our look at one man’s dream of playing in the NFL. Here is a report from CB Donterrious Porter and his regional combine last Sunday.
–I want to start this off by thanking the Lord for getting me too and from my proday safely. I’d also like to thank Him for opportunity to do the proday and the skills that He’s blessed me with. Without the Lord none of this would be possible, so I give all the credit to him.
As for the proday itself it was a lot of fun and just an overall great experience to have been apart of. We started the day off my checking in and having a few to get situated for the day. After that we all came together so the scouts could explain the layout for the day. Next we jogged around the Bear’s practice facility twice and then proceeded to stretch together as a group. Some of the stretching we did was very different then I’m use to and felt like a workout class but it was a lot of fun.Wethen broke up into our positions groups and starterd off the drills for the day in this order:
- shuttle
- 40
- height and weight
- broad jump
- vertical jump
- position drills
We were not told any of our times and we did not do the Bench press or three cone drill. I would have to say the position drills were my favorite thing to do that day because I got the show Scouts my athleticism, ball skills, hand eye coordination, and hustle.Overall I feel I had a good day but in the end it comes down to how the scouts felt I did. I feel many people think its about they numbers you put up that day but I feel its about how the scouts viewed you and if they feel you have a lot of potential. For example, someone might have the best numbers that day at the combine but that doesn’t mean he’s the best, it just means he had the best numbers that day. Someone else could be the better athelte but didnt have the best day. So I feel its not all about the numbers at any proday because numbers on paper wont ever win a football game.
I feel its about how the scouts view not only your skill set but your character as well. My goal was to go into the combine and give it 100% but more importantly to show scouts i have the potential to be a great player. All my numbers could of been bad but if scouts can see my potential and knew that I had a bad day then I will alway have a shot because its about what they see in you overall not just what you ran or jumped that day. So for me its not about my numbers I put up Sunday but about if I got the scouts to see my potential as a player.
