A glimmer of hope against San Diego

Daniel Thomas has played exceptionally well this season.
With the mighty San Diego Chargers next up on the schedule I thought I would offer up some numbers to chew on. The chargers rank 28th in run blocking, and 5th is pass protection. That would seem to indicate the need to apply more pressure (BLITZ!) then we have in games past if we hope to slow down the Chargers passing game.
Miami on the other hand, has under used Daniel Thomas, who interestingly, ranks just below Adrian Peterson in Pro Football Focus’s rankings for Running backs. Pretty good company to be in, yes? Miami needs to run to control the clock, and limit San Diego’s opportunities on offense.
Miami has been a pass first offense thus far, and this is the week to change things up a bit. Another interesting note, is PFF ranks Chad Henne as the 5th top QB, Rivers? Well, he comes in at #23. Advantage…um…Miami. Who would have thought that? See, there is some hope. You just have to look for it.
There’s more. Both Brandon Marshall, and Brian Hartline rank higher then any receiver on San Diego’s roster. And, it should get better from a Dolphin perspective because San Diego is an injured team, especially in the WR area. Both Vincent Jackson, and Malcom Floyd were kept out of practice suffering from an abdomen and and groin injury, respectively. Their RB Ryan Matthews has been limited by a foot injury as well. Antonio Gates is most likely out this week with a foot injury.
Miami seems to be getting healthier, as Vontae Davis returned to practice on a limited basis, and aside from a few minor injuries they should be pretty healthy for the game.
The one area of concern is San Diego’s defense, while not spectacular overall, they do represent a challenge for Miami because they can rush the passer. Again, this is why I believe Miami will need to lean heavily on the running game, and limit the amount of times Henne needs to put it up. Use play action, and please, please, use Fasano, and Bush in the passing game. Henne will need quick outlets to be successful here.
San Diego is a good team, no doubt. But, at first glance it appears Miami is catching them at the right time. It is up to them to take advantage of the match ups in their favor. RUN the ball, stop the run, control the clock, and get it done in the red zone. If they do this, and I actually think they can, I can see Miami finally winning one 21-17.
Call me a homer. That’s fine.

News – Fins claim RB Steve Slaton off waivers

RB Steve Slaton was claimed off waivers today by the Fins.
The Miami Dolphins claimed former Texans RB Steve Slaton off of waivers today. The Texans released Slaton yesterday.
Slaton, drafted in the 3rd round in 2008 by the Texans, had a break out year as a rookie when he rushed for over 1280 yards and 9 TDs, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. But since then he has battled injury. This year, Slaton had 7 carries for 20 yards before being waived by the Texans.
I’m not sure what role he will play in the Dolphins offense, as he is a Reggie Bush type back. He did act as a kick returner last year for the Texans, so he may play that role for the Fins.
To make room for Slaton, the Dolphins waived DE Ryan Baker.
