Tony McDaniel

QB Tannehill to start against Colts

tannehill11 150x150 QB Tannehill to start against Colts

Ryan Tannehill will start today against the Colts.

According to multiple sources, including the Miami Dolphins official site, QB Ryan Tannehill will be starting today against the Colts.

In other news, DT Tony McDaniel will be out of the game with an injury. QB Pat Devlin, CB Richard Marshall, DB Anderson Russell, LB Josh Kaddu, OT Will Yeatman and TE Michael Egnew on the inactive list. Nolan Carroll will get his fourth consecutive start at cornerback in place of the injured Richard Marshall.

The Colts will be without CB Vontae Davis and TE Coby Fleener. WR Nathan Palmer, CB Marshay Green, DE Clifton Geathers, DE Lawrence Guy, and OT Tony Hillis will be on the inactives list.

Miami Dolphins 2012 Free Agency Primer

The media and fans have started speculating about Miami making a major splash in free agency by signing a “franchise QB” like Peyton Manning or Matt Flynn.

To do that though the team will need cap space. According to the salary cap figures I can find Miami presently has $108 mil committed to the 2012 salary cap with the players currently under contract. Early projections put the 2012 salary cap near the $120 mil allotted to teams in 2011 – meaning Miami already has some, but not a whole lot, of wiggle room (especially when you factor in Miami must also have space for the incoming rookies).

Free Agency Primer Part 1: re-signing the Dolphin’s free agents

Before looking at bringing in a QB, Miami must first look at re-signing its own free agents. Unfortunately most of Miami’s key free agents are on the defensive side of the ball, so departures here could adversely affect Miami’s good but not great defense.

Dead Weight

VernonCarey 3 150x150 Dead Weight

Vernon Carey has struggled this year at RG.

Last week I looked at some of the surprise players making a resurgence with the Miami Dolphins. Today, I thought I’d look at some of the players who are doing the opposite.

There is a lot of “dead weight” sucking the cap space out of the Dolphins roster. And I thought I’d take a look at the players I think the Fins should move on past at the conclusion of this season.

I will skip some of the obvious cuts, such as Marc Colombo, and instead look at some of the players who may or may not be on the bubble, but should be.

O-lineman Vernon Carey took a pay cut to come back to Miami and be transitioned from OT to OG. The move did not pay off for Miami. Currently, Carey is rated as the #35 overall OG in the NFL and has negative grades in both passing and run blocking. His only positive grade? In penalties…..which is kind of surprising considering how many times he was flagged as an OT. Car Continue reading

News – CB Davis, RB Thomas out for Sunday’s game

daniel thomas 150x150 News CB Davis, RB Thomas out for Sundays game

Daniel Thomas will miss the game against San Diego.Photo- Jonathan Brownfield/US Presswire

Both CB Vontae Davis and RB Daniel Thomas will miss this Sunday’s game in San Diego. Both did not make the team’s flight from Miami to California.

Thomas’ absence means Reggie Bush will most likely start for a Miami team that will probably take on more of a pass-first approach against the Chargers. It will be interesting to see how much newly signed Steve Slaton will play.

I also expect Nolan Carroll to get the starting nod in place of Davis.

No word yet on DE Tony McDaniel. McDaniel is nursing a hand injury, and I do not expect him to play.

News – Roster moves continue

nate jones 150x150 News Roster moves continue

CB Nate Jones returns for his second stint with the Dolphins

TheMiamiDolphins have released TE Dante Rosario. Rosario was signed two weeks ago after being released by the Broncos. To fill his spot and the spot vacated by RB Larry Johnson, the Dolphins signed former Fin CB Nate Jones and former Cowboy DT Igor Olshansky.

Jones played with the Dolphins in 2008 and 2009, grabbing 3 INTs during that time. Jones joined the Broncos as a free agent in 2010.

Olshansky, a 7 year veteran, has 13 sacks with former teams San Diego and Dallas. Olshansky was a Jeff Ireland/Bill Parcells draft pick of the Cowboys in 2004.

The additions of CB Nate Jones and DT Igor Olshansky lead me to believe that the injuries to CB Vontae Davis and DE Tony McDaniel could be more serious than initially thought.
